Reflexology – Ancient History

One widely held theory is that it originated in China over 5,000 years ago.
Although proof is evasive another belief is that the Egyptian and Babylonian cultures used Reflexology.
Egypt does hold the oldest documentation dating between 2500 - 2330 B.C..
Reflexology surfaced again in Japan as Shiatsu (means: pressure with fingers) and then moved through Europe
In 1582 the North American Cherokee Indians used pressure on the feet to relieve pain.

Reflexology – Modern History

In 1913 Dr. William Fitzgerald mapped the body for Reflexology and presented this information to the medical profession using the term “Zone Therapy” In 1920 Eunice Ingham (1879-1974) (Mother of Modern Reflexology) began teaching - through her research with her son. In 1981 Mildred Carter made Reflexology a household name with her research using pebbles in her son's shoes the first chart was designed.


Reflexology – Today

Reflexology goes hand in hand as a health care tool with Allopathic Medicine, Massage Therapy, Chiropractic, and other modalities of bodywork. It is becoming more and more evident that it takes more than one modality to achieve overall good health.
